Michael Hawkins, MD

Dr. Hawkins has been part of the Cogent HMG team for nearly six years, and oversees our programs in the southern region of the country serving as a Chief Medical Officer.
Inspired by Wachter and Goldman’s 1996 New England Journal of Medicine article where the phrase hospitalist was first coined, Dr. Hawkins sold his internal medicine practice and moved to Charlotte, N.C., to help start the first hospitalist team at Presbyterian Hospital. Two years later he returned to South Carolina to start up a hospitalist program in Walterboro, where he was the Program Director for eight years.
Dr. Hawkins earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, a master's degree from the University of Tennessee and bachelor’s degree from The Citadel. Dr. Hawkins was elected by his peers to serve as Governor for the S.C. Chapter of American College of Physician. He is a member of the South Carolina Medical Association, is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Senior Fellow in the Society of Hospital Medicine. He is a recipient of several awards, including the James P. McFarland Award, presented by the S.C Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
