Society of Hospital Medicine Announces New Masters in Hospital Medicine

(PHILADELPHIA, March 30, 2011)  – The Society of Hospital Medicine, the leading organization representing hospitalists, is proud to announce the upcoming induction of four new Masters in Hospital Medicine and the appointment of two members to its board of directors.

“Like hospital medicine groups across the country, SHM depends on the vision and talent of its leaders,” says SHM President, Jeffrey Wiese, MD, FACP, SFHM. “We are thrilled to honor our newest Masters in Hospital Medicine, a diverse cohort of individuals who have epitomized SHM’s vision of transforming healthcare and revolutionizing patient care.”

SHM’s newest Masters in Hospital Medicine are: Mary Jo Gorman, MD, MBA, MHM; Ron Greeno, MD, FCCP, MHM; Russell Holman, MD, MHM; and Erin Stucky Fisher, MD, MHM. They will be officially inducted in a ceremony on May 12 at Hospital Medicine 2011, SHM’s annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas.

They join SHM’s first three Masters in Hospital Medicine, who were inducted in 2010.

The Master in Hospital Medicine designation is the highest honor awarded by SHM and is by nomination only, based on the individual’s contribution to the hospital medicine specialty and his or her commitment to excellence in fields such as clinical care, healthcare initiatives, research, writing and publication, and administrative positions. Masters earn the right to use the “MHM” credential alongside others, such as MD.

In addition to recognizing the new Masters, SHM will induct nearly 175 Fellows in Hospital Medicine (FHM) and Senior Fellows in Hospital Medicine (SFHM), designations which recognize hospitalists who have demonstrated their commitment to hospital medicine and improving patient care in the hospital setting.

SHM has also appointed two new members to its board of directors: Robert Harrington, MD, SFHM and Erin Stucky Fisher, MD, MHM. SHM board members are elected by SHM members and serve for a three year term.

Robert Harrington, MD, SFHM, is chief medical officer for Locum Leaders, a national physician recruitment company specializing in locum tenens. During his tenure, Locum Leaders has been named a US Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Business of the Year in 2010 and 2011 and has been recognized as one of Atlanta’s Best Places to Work. Harrington serves as the Chair of the SHM Family Medicine Task Force and the board liaison to the IT Core Committee. Harrington earned his bachelor’s from the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. He completed his residency at the Medical Center of Delaware in Wilmington, Del.

Introducing SHM’s 2011 Masters in Hospital Medicine

Mary Jo Gorman, MD, MBA, MHM, a leader in improving the delivery of critical care and increasing access to intensivists, is CEO of Advanced ICU Care. Advanced ICU Care, largest and most experienced private practice providing tele- ICU services, hascared for more than 3-5,000 ICU patients across the country. Gorman has over 20 years of clinical, healthcare executive management and entrepreneurial experience. Previously she served as chief medical officer for IPC- The Hospitalist Company, where she grew the physician staff to 400 hospitalists across the country. Gorman also founded Critical Care Services Inc, which provides intensivist staffing services. In 2009, she was named one of the top 25 Women in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare. Gorman is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine and served on its Board of Directors for six years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from St. Louis University, a Masters in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, and her doctorate of medicine from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill.

Ron Greeno, MD, FCCP, MHM, is a founder of Cogent Healthcare and currently serves as chief medical officer and senior consultant for The Cogent Group. Greeno is a nationally known expert in the field of hospital medicine, sought by decision makers in Washington with regards to healthcare reform, and is a renowned speaker. He serves on the editorial board for both Hospitalist Leadership Advisor and Today’s Hospitalist. Greeno was the first hospitalist to be named one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare. Highly involved with SHM, Greeno is the incoming chair of the Public Policy Committee and was the 2003 recipient of the SHM Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine. He completed his medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Iowa hospitals and clinics.

Russell Holman, MD, MHM, is chief clinical officer of Cogent Healthcare. He is an advocate for hospital medicine and participated in the Roundtable on Value Based Purchasing for Hospitals, US Senate Finance Committee in Washington, D.C., in 2008. Holman has been actively involved with SHM, serving as past president, director of the Society’s 2004 annual meeting and the developer and director of SHM’s Leadership Academies. Holman received the SHM Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine Award in 2002. He currently serves on the SHM Leadership Committee, Executive Review Committee and the Performance and Standards Task Force. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine and his graduate medical degree from University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics.

Erin Stucky Fisher, MD, MHM, is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego. Other positions held include Fellowship Director of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Associate Program Director of Pediatric Residency and Medical Director of Quality Improvement. She has been a pioneer in pediatric hospital medicine and integral to the growth and development of the core dimensions of hospital medicine, including pediatric quality improvement, care delivery, teaching and clinical roles. At the national level, she is actively involved with quality initiatives with American Academy of Pediatrics, Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the National Association of Childrens Hospitals and Related Institutions.
