Improving the delivery of critical care medicine, the most costly center of inpatient care, is an important focus for hospitals and health systems nationwide. With a desire to expand our intensivist services for the hospitals we serve, Cogent HMG acquired The Intensivist Group (TIG) in August 2011.

Founded in 2001 by Jay Cowen, MD, The Intensivist Group operates numerous full-service intensivist programs, delivering exceptional quality and outcomes and significant cost savings for its hospital partners. In 2007 his colleague, Stephen Matchett, MD, came on board and now serves as TIG's Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.

Both founded by physicians, Cogent HMG and The Intensivist Group are built on a foundation of strong physician leadership and practice management support. Like Cogent HMG, TIG distinguished itself by accomplishing the goals identified by their hospital partners, and delivering the highest quality care possible to patients. Coming together gave each of us an even greater opportunity to manage quality, cost and the patient experience throughout the hospital stay.

This partnership provided The Intensivist Group with greater resources and additional technology allowing them to strengthen their commitment to bring the highest quality critical care services to their hospital partners.

This move also has positioned Cogent HMG as the largest critical care services provider in the nation with programs in nearly 20 hospitals across the United States.
